A Chinese national was arrested in Kandal province’s Takhmao City on Monday for setting up equipment in an effort to start an internet call scam, according to police.
Kandal police chief Eav Chamroeun said Zhu Chunle, a 31-year-old from the Chinese province of Fujian, was arrested on Monday morning at Tra Ny Ka Hotel after installing a voice over internet protocol (VoIP) gateway in his room.
The hotel manager said Mr. Chunle left the hotel at about 4 p.m. on Sunday after checking in at about noon and did not return that night. Takhmao police opened an investigation after being alerted by the hotel’s manager and police officers arrested him when he returned to the hotel the next day, General Chamroeun said. Mr. Chunle is currently being held at the provincial police station for questioning and will then be sent to the provincial court.
Gen. Chamroeun said police were unsure if Mr. Chunle was connected to any other VoIP scammers, hundreds of whom were deported to China last week.
“He has not answered yet,” he said. “We are still investigating him.”
