Police are searching for eight men who beat a 32-year-old man in a dispute over his sister-in-law, leading him to jump into a small Takeo province river to escape, where he drowned, officials said on Tuesday.
The dispute arose on Monday evening because one of the suspects, Ron Rom, 21, was in love with the sister-in-law of the victim, Mak Thuc, said San Savorn, police chief of Angkor Borei district’s Prek Phtorl commune.
“The victim told the suspect not to come at night.
The victim verbally harassed him and pushed a door, knocking over the suspect’s motorcycle,” Mr. Savorn said.
“The suspect got angry and said, ‘You can’t get away Thuc. I’ll burn your house.’”
Mr. Rom returned with seven others to beat Mak Thuc, and as he fled, he jumped into the river and drowned, Mr. Savorn said.
According to the police chief, the suspects are wanted for causing Mak Thuc’s death.
District police chief Phy Chhun said Mak Thuc “didn’t like” that Mr. Rom was in love with his sister-in-law.
