Preacher Drowns in Mekong Ferry Car Accident

A Christian preacher drowned on Sunday morning on her daily commute after her car plunged into the Mekong River as she tried to board a ferry in Phnom Penh’s Chroy Changvar district.

Kim Moeung-sook, a 67-year-old South Korean national, panicked on a ramp at the Svay Chrum ferry port and accelerated into the river, said Chan Bunthoeun, Chroy Changvar commune’s police chief.

“She missed the ferry,” he said.

Mr. Bunthoeun expressed confusion at the accident, because the woman drove the same route from Phnom Penh to a school where she worked in Kandal province’s Khsach Kandal district every day.

It took police officials 90 minutes to retrieve the car, and her body was sent to Calmette Hospital before being transferred to the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital, according to district police chief Seam Sothavuth.

District police are investigating the case, he said.
