When Maersk last week committed to carbon neutral shipping, it was certainly aware that NYK, the Japanese shipping company, has also been working on the design of a carbon neutral carrier, the Super Eco Ship 2050.
Solar panels, a super lightweight hull design, hydrogen fuel cells, on-demand pontoons and dolphin-inspired flapping fins — used instead of screws — are employed to cut the ship’s energy requirements by 70%.
NYK has not yet announced when it expects the first full-scale prototype.
