Local, International Art on Display in Siem Reap

Cambodian and international artists will be featured in an exhibition, “The Arts of Music and Dance,” opening on Friday night in Siem Reap City.

Held at the gallery of British artist Sasha Constable, the event marks the start of the ChubMet Music & Art Festival.

Featuring 12 artists, the exhibition includes a Khmer classical dancer lacquer painting by Cambodian artist and designer Lim Muy Theam and an acrylic illustration of a base player by self-taught artist Thang Sothea.

As she researched works for the exhibition, Ms. Constable came across photos by Sharon May, a U.S. writer who has researched the Khmer Rouge regime and visited Site Two refugee camp on the Thai-Cambodian border in 1985 as a human rights researcher.

“I just found them compelling and beautiful, really, just full of joy, so soon after the Khmer Rouge,” Ms. Constable said.

This year’s music festival will close on March 2 with a concert by British singer and Grammy winner Joss Stone.
