CPP President Publicly Praises Party Faithful

Cambodian People’s Party President Chea Sim opened a major party meeting Tuesday by praising the membership for contributing to the nation’s economic progress and for helping minimize the impact of the current regional economic crisis.

He cited no specific examples of how the party had helped the economy, but boasted about expanding water, electricity and road projects in the capital.

Speaking at an auditorium at Apsara Television headquarters, he said the party was committed to free and fair elections scheduled for July and would further determine campaign strategy at this week’s meeting, which concludes Friday afternoon. A party is scheduled for Friday night.

Some 700 party members were invited, including the 153-person central committee, National Assembly members, ministry officials and district party chiefs.

Chea Sim said the party supports the four-point plan of Japan, formulated to ensure the elections are free and fair. He also said possible dates for the next party general assembly will be discussed this week.

Other senior CPP officials were expected to deliver speeches later Tuesday and early today before party discussions begin, according to party sources.

Tuesday’s opening address and Friday’s closing speech are the only parts of the four-day meeting open to the media.
