Hun Sen Congratulates Chan-Ocha on Election

Prime Minister Hun Sen on Friday extended a message of “cordial congratulations” to his newly elected Thai counterpart, General Prayuth Chan-ocha, who was appointed as Prime Minister on Thursday by a handpicked assembly of lawmakers after taking over the country in a military coup three months ago.

“I am very optimistic that Your Excellency and I will be able to bring about close friendship, good neighborliness and productive cooperation to serve the interests of our two nations and peoples,” Mr. Hun Sen said in his letter.

He also offered his “best wishes for your good health and great success in the fulfillment of your noble tasks and for the greater prosperity of the Thai people.”

Last month, Defense Minister Tea Banh flew to Thailand, where he posed, held hands and exchanged gifts with Gen. Prayuth.

Thailand’s outgoing ambassador to Cambodia reportedly thanked Foreign Minister Hor Namhong earlier this week for not allowing a Thai opposition government-in-exile to form in Cambodia following the military’s takeover of government in May.
