A man is recovering at Phnom Penh’s Calmette Hospital after being shot by a passenger in a black Mercedes-Benz on Russian Boulevard late Tuesday night, an official said on Wednesday.
Bith Bunly, 45, had been riding pillion on his friend’s motorbike and was shot twice as the pair passed the Mercedes after emerging from an underpass on the Tuol Kok district thoroughfare, according to Phat Sarann, chief of police in Phsar Depot 3 commune.
“The victim was shot in the left shoulder and the left thigh. The gunfire came from a black Mercedes,” he said, adding that the car then sped away.
Mr. Bunly said there were no witnesses to the shooting, which occurred at about 11 p.m., and that the victim and his friend told police that they had been tailing the Mercedes while attempting to overtake it, possibly aggravating those inside.
Maing Sokluch, chief of the municipal military police’s penal bureau, said investigators had little hope of tracking down the culprit.
“The victims are our only witnesses and it is too hard for our municipal military police to find the black Mercedes,” he said.
