A man was shot in the arm after being chased by police through the streets of Phnom Penh on motorbikes Wednesday night, with the police officers fleeing the scene, officials said on Thursday.
Two police officers began chasing Sok Lay, 21, at about 10 p.m. in Russei Keo district after he failed to stop for not having number plates and acting suspiciously, said Tuol Sangke commune police chief Huy Hean.
Mr. Hean explained that the officers chased the suspect for 2 or 3 km before they were able to move their motorbike in front of his and stop him.
There was a scuffle with the police officers, who grabbed the suspect by the shirt and then pulled out a pistol to beat him,” he said, claiming that the gun then went off by accident.
Mr. Lay was still recovering at Calmette Hospital on Thursday, where he was being treated for a bullet wound to his left bicep, according to a police report on the incident.
“Now we are searching to identify who the police officers were, and which unit they are from,” Mr. Hean said.
