The governors of Siem Reap and Kompong Chhnang provinces have been promoted in the military, according to a royal decree signed last month.
The decree, which was signed by King Norodom Sihamoni and dated April 24, promotes Siem Reap governor Khim Bunsong from major general to lieutenant general and Kompong Chhnang governor Chhour Chandoeun from brigadier general to major general.
Maj. Gen Chandoeun is the former commander for the Kompong Chhnang sub-region in the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) while Lt. Gen. Bunsong is the former commander for the Siem Reap sub-region.
“Normally, when we work well, we would be awarded such recognition and I feel happy,” Lt. Gen. Bunsong said of his promotion.
Both Lt. Gen. Bunsong and Maj. Gen. Chandoeun were appointed provincial governors last year. Prior to that, Lt. Gen. Bunsong was a career officer who served more than 30 years in the military in Siem Reap.
Although updated figures are not available, Cambodia had more than 2,000 generals in 2010, when Defense Minister Tea Banh handed down a temporary moratorium on promotions.
