Two men, one a military policeman, were killed by police Saturday night in Phnom Penh, while a grenade blast in another part of the capital wounded five people.
The two men, both dressed in civilian clothes, were shot dead by police in front of the central railway station at about 11 pm, police confirmed Sunday.
Police said they had gone to the scene because the civilian man with the police officer had shot into the air. Both were told to stop, but started to flee and the civilian started shooting at the police, according to Khuon Sophan of the municipal penal police chief. The police then returned fire, killing the civilian and the military policeman.
Meanwhile, five people were injured in Russei Keo district when a man threw a grenade into a brothel at about 9:30 pm Saturday, police said.
Tim Prosar, district police chief, said police are continuing to investigate the incident, but believe it was the result of a personal dispute. The grenade blew up before reaching the inside of the brothel.
